Our Ideology
Traditional Chinese Martial Arts (TCMA) was evolved and tested over thousands of years through countless of warfares and practical reasons. TCMA is one of the rare martial arts in the world that goes beyond just the physical combat aspect; it trains practitioners primarily in the minds to experience and fully understand nature, universe, medicine, astrology, warfare strategy, philosophy, arts, and science through the body.
At Wu Tan, we were very fortunate to inherit such pure lineage of kung fu along with its ideology and, most importantly, the complete training and development methods. However, as mentioned above, TCMA "evolved" over history; it is never meant to be perfect or remain at its current stage. Our mission is to continue the legacy of this prestige lineage, by fully preserve the arts and knowledge as well as to make sure this "traditional" arts can evolve with time. However, we treat what we learned from our predecessors with the highest trust and respect, we put 100% dedication to try and learn and understand what's passed down to us, and we expect our students to have the same attitude towards the arts as well. Because only when we thoroughly learned and understand the skills, we can then improve it.
Our four core training ideologies are:
Balance Between Tradition and Science - We train with the traditional methods, but we validate reasoning and purpose behind the ancient methods, then we seek to implement modern physical science to enhance the results.
Training the Brain - We do not train soldiers or cage-fighting gladiators; we train leaders and generals who can take this ancient knowledge and effectively apply to our daily lives that can affect hundreds or thousands of people.
Nourishing, not Exhausting - We train with a balanced mindset of combat and health. We want every individual who learns this art can still practice this art in their 80s. TCMA should nourish one’s body, not to exhaust it.
We valued forms, we believe that forms are documentations of experience and knowledge from our predecessors. But, we also believe that only by extracting individual moves out of the forms and train upon them is the more effective way to learn.

Our Styles of Focus
Bajiquan・八極拳
Bajiquan is one of the few styles in Chinese martial arts that is very offensive based, known for its directness, short-range explosive power expression and the stomping throughout its forms. In recent history, head trainers of the Ching Dynasty (last) emperor PuYi’s bodyguards, the infamous communist leader Mao Tse-Tung’s bodyguards, and the founding president of Taiwan Jiang Kai-Shek’s bodyguards were all famous Bajiquan Masters!
Bagua Zhang・八卦掌
Bagua Zhang is one of the most unique (and advanced) style amongst all Chinese Martial Arts. Bagua Zhang was created referencing to the core concepts of the Bagua diagram. Bagua Zhang is known for its circular walking, and the restless but fluid movements. Unlike most other styles of Kung Fu, Bagua Zhang’s offensive and defensive mechanism lies within the “turns” during its continuous motions.
pigua Zhang・劈掛掌
The “opposite” of Bajiquan. Pigua Zhang and Bajiquan are often taught as complementary styles, especially in Taiwan. In fact, there is a Chinese martial arts proverb that goes: "When Pigua is added to Baji, gods and demons will all be terrified. When Baji is added to Pigua, heroes will sigh knowing they are no match against it." Pigua Zhang is known to be a long-range, fast speed, sharpness, and flexibility.
Weapons・兵器
Weapon is the extension of our limb, therefore at Wu Tan we believe in “fist before weapon”. There are several weapon we study in Wu Tan: Jian (straight sword), Dao (saber), Qiang (spear), Guen (staff), Deer Horn Knives, Double Hooks, and the famous Bajiquan weapon - DaQiang (grand spear)
“Traditional Chinese Martial Arts nourishes your mind and body, as opposed to sports and fitness activities consumes.”
